Leftover summer surrenders
to the cloak of early twilight
Fingers of chill frost scar
the Chestnut leaves with rust

Mushroom gatherers in early morning fields.
Searching for nature’s free bounty
While among the hedgerows Blackberries offer
their choicest fruit just out of reach

The dormouse, fat from August pastures
lifts a quivering snout to the north wind.
Scuttles down the nest burrow
and prepares for ‘The Sleeping Time’

The song of summer is fading
The intermezzo of autumn is in the air.
and the lament of winter
is waiting in the wings.
