Somme 1916

Can one comprehend how stomachs churned
As shell on shell turned fields to mud
Turning green to brown and then to red
Hell did not need the stockpiled dead
Young men prayed for mother’s touch
Once lover’s kissed they now kissed death
The rat-tat-tat of hailstone lead
In trenches slain no coffin lid
The bullets swarmed like angry bees
Soft babbling brooks that trickled blood
Their uniforms disclosed which side
But naked skin the truth belied
As far away their families weep
Into the ground their souls did seep

quote:
"Hell did not need the stockpiled dead"
Oh, but it did. It's lust for blood is unquenchable. Then, now, and for as long of a future as Man will have.

More feelings and fewer words please
