my constant companion
my shadow
alert even in the dark
warned me of
the nighttime wind
I heeded his warning
for the wind
shrieked hard and loud enough
I sat straight up in bed
then lay there sweating
in the dark of night
The Hovel was taking a beating
the dread in my heart
caused by the screeching wind
made me think of fire
swung my legs around stood
peered out my window
my shadow and I
at the mean streets of Thibodaux
still half asleep
streetlights illuminated unsecured things
tumbling along with the wind
but no fire
then . . .
the wind stopped and an eerie quiet
to an ordinary March night
returned
my shadow smiled
I trudged back to bed
he tucked me in

"Thibodaux", Louisiana? Even a shadow can get blown away with those hurricane winds. Great story Jerry, likely more truth than fiction. Very pleased to see you back again.

More feelings and fewer words please

Yes indeed, Ari, Thibodaux, Louisiana.
Right also about those hurricane winds . . . Thank you . . .

Right..our shadows do not seem as frightening now that we know better than we did when we were kids, drawing monsters on the walls cast by shadows..how scary they still are to my grandson.

Isn't it wonderful watch the grandchildren go through the same horror of shadows that we did? Thank you jjote.

I took some comfort in this poem. There is something about knowing a storm scaring the primeval bjesus out of us, no matter what our age or situation, makes us all alike. ~L

You are so right, my friend. Storms can be vicious and we are completely unable to do one damn thing about it. Tornadoes, for instance.
