Cypripedium acaule-Pink Lady's Slipper-Wild Orchid * In May; I dreamt that a paladin, Dressed in silver threads Was winding his way Through forest duff; (a humus dream of sorts-) In that dream- The knight, *Mycorrihiza Played the part of incubus, Rubbing the slender legs Of maid Cypripedium... Until she climaxed pink flowers. * * *Mycorrhiza-(mahy-kuh-rahy-zuh) A symbiotic association of the mycelium of a fungus with the roots of certain plants. It forms a closely woven mass around the rootlets, In order to penetrate the cells of the root. A rare, and special Mycorrihiza-( shown as silver threads in forrest duff samples) must be in contact with the roots of the pink lady slipper, in order for it to thrive and bloom. Mycorrhizas are extremely sensitive to chemical fertilizers, and herbicides. |

My Uncle often said that I had been born in a greenhouse. It wasn't until I was much older that I realized he was referring to its color. Your knowledge of Flora borders on the obscene ice. More feelings and fewer words please |

Thank you Ari... I have been a landscaper, and nurseryman my whole life.. Also an amateur botanist, which aligned itself well with my occupation. Thanks for the reply |

Fascinating! Indeed amazing things happen in the world of flowers. You reminded me of a very interesting book I was once given, which was about the "sex-life" of flowers. Nature leaves us breathless in wonder. Thank you for sharing this miracle with beauty and competence. Love, Margherita "Forget every touch or sound that did not teach you how to dance." |

We do have the slipper orchid in England but they’re extremely rare. When one is discovered the location is kept secret. If you haven’t visited England there is so much for a nurseryman to enjoy. Kew gardens, the Eden Project as well as the many country estates with their landscaped gardens. In the 1800s intrepid plant hunters were sent the world over to collect fauna to satisfy the demands for landscape gardeners. Much of our countryside is protected from the greed of developers by the Green Belt and considering the price of land in our small county, that’s quite an achievement. I wish I could say the same for our cities but most Europeans do that far better than we do. Cari. |
