we die only once
but its for such a long time
and that kind of reality makes you
hate the world
hate it yes
but still love it
with an abstract pitying kind of love
and we take when we must take
we give when we must give
I used to think thoughts like these
within my abstract and non-reality
mindset as I strolled through old
New Orleans cemeteries
and hearing somber church bells tolling
those solitary, internal moments
caused me to doubt everything
I had ever learned
absofrickinlutely*
for until that moment in time
I had received
more punishment than crime
felt like I was standing on the edge of the world
felt I had nothing going for me
that was when I began to
construct fraudulent memories out of thin air
and didn’t want to know
how the story ends
I was living on borrowed time
in a borrowed world
and saw it through borrowed eyes
and it showed me only sorrow
for whatever reason
as I walked out of those old cemeteries
I walked upon her
she of bee-stung lips and porno-queen attitude
ahhh . . .
you can choose your sin
but you can't choose your consequences
comme ci, comme ça
such a grand love dwells within my heart
I call her sha
would that I had found
this love
much earlier in my life
eh . . . but I am grateful I have it now
and will keep it in my heart
until we meet again
in a time beyond
I will know her
she will know me
my Cleopatra to her Mark Anthony

*Thanks Lori, you were the first one I'd ever seen use the word, "absofrickinlutely." That was quite a few years ago though.

"we die only once " Ha!  Been a couple times I would have argued that point - but, so far, you're 'absofrickinlutely' correct - I really have not died yet.

Enjoyed the read, my friend.

Jerry, you have read some of my thoughts on dying.I promised I'd go first and save a space for you.I still have my rink roller skates and a jump rope. Also some board games. I will load up a duffle bag and you can take your pick. In the mean time go out and scale some flat stones or pick up a pretty girl. You still have time.
I will give a shout when I am on the way.Jo

Awww Jo, you have made my day. Heh.Heh And I for sure accept your very kind offer. I think if I dig around I might find my cherished agate and other marbles, plus my G.I. Joe collection, and if you like you can borrow what you like. Thank you kind Jo.

I still do friend and probably always will. Once on the block, the streets never leave you, even in an open field.

More feelings and fewer words please

Thank you so much, Ari. You know what you are talking about when you speak of the streets!

I don't think your mind was abstract, or non-real when you were walking about in the graveyard...

It may have touched on a reality that is not "normal"..but everything is real that exists..and not supernatural, as I have been told by very religious people.

I like this poem, a soulful sigh, in words--just like all good poetry.

Ice, you said . . .

Yes, you are probably correct, but I have lived in New Orleans, and in its shadow for many, many years. The folklore about that area of the United States is such that I have these "voodoo" and pirates and what have you that I have a non-real thoughts on my mind quite a lot. Thank you for your nice comments, I appreciate it.

Hey Jerry, thoughtful writing here. Sometimes I feel like our thoughts can make us die a little bit when we get in those dark places. Or it sure seems to feel like it. I personally believe in "evil" and I think when we are at our weakest it can impact us and there are places where "evil" is more "concentrated". In other words, stay out of the graveyards on a bad day....
Glad to see you back my friend.  ~L

"as I walked out of those old cemeteries
I walked upon her" WoW! I always thought this meant you had a powerful dislike for someone! Awesome story with some scary thoughts sometimes!

If I were more than I am, I'd see things differently instead of the same all the time.

Thank you Lori, and I know you are right about "evil." I live within a block of a huge graveyard and there are days when Zoe will NOT walk around it with me. Nope. Just will not.

Thank you, DV, for your thoughts, but sometimes there is beauty within the confines of the sinister appearance.

"sometimes there is beauty in a sinister apppearance", not in the poem but in your comment-reply...now that's a positive mindset that I like. Anyway. despite the somber note in the poem, I feel your spirit is not captive to  it, but just hovering above in a musing kind of way.

Hah! Thank you, my friend, jjote, for understanding where I was coming from, both in my poem and my comment. I so appreciate it!
