All That I've Been Through *************************** Summer mornings are chilly. That ol' bed is damp and hard... When you spend the night sleeping face down in the yard. But, you guided my blindness... You helped me to crawl... Gave me pity and kindness, and a soft place to fall. I'm not too sure what we did... But we must have done great. There's pancakes and bacon and eggs on my plate. There's no silent treatment. You didn't leave me, or hit me... As I sat licking the hair of the ol' dog that bit me. You haven't cried, cussed or hollered, or dug up old bones of blame... You kissed me and fed me and loved me... to shame. A shell of a man... Who, but for you, would be hollow. The dog's hair is matted and too thick to swallow. The cold beer is bitter... Like bile on my tongue. The "cool cat" in the mirror seems old... for so young. For all that I've been through... You've gone through a lot. I'm so sorry, darlin'... That I ever forgot. Turn off the T.V. Don't answer the phone. For awhile, let there just be Us two, alone. Yes, there's contracts and deadlines. There's decisions and dues. But, the world doesn't need me... Like I've needed you. We've been strangers who pass by each other each day. But, each day... You've been here... While I was away. And I've been away for far far too long. Growing weaker and weaker in a fight to be strong. Too unsure to show doubts Much too scared to show fear. Way too fake to be real and to let you draw near. Too frail to show weakness. Far too false to be true. Forgetting that I need not hide myself from you. For all that I've gone through... You've been through a lot. I'm so sorry, darlin'... That I ever forgot. *** |

Excellent first poem with your new identity, Larry. I like this one better that the one before. The poem . . . you put in some great lines and I loved the downplaying of yourself in this admission of guilt, which seemingly have been forgiven. To say that I have been there, done that it is true, even though it was many years ago I still hurt sometimes at night ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

Yes, most of us have past lives to remember, with kindness, maybe regret, but above all the good times are hard to forget. (like pancakes, bacon eggs on your plate - I love such everyday memories that you have brought into the poem). Great write Larry |

Welcome Larry Yes, as the others mentioned this work is very lyrical in it's presentation. It's amazing what we owe our conscience sometimes and even more amazing when loyalty is stronger than what we're worth. How can you not love someone like that? I enjoyed this very much.
