"The blues are because you're getting fat and maybe it's been raining too long,
you're just sad that's all. The mean reds are horrible.
Suddenly you're afraid and you don't know what you're afraid of."
Truman Capote "Breakfast At Tiffany's"

The Mean Reds

Out of sight, something lurks
Inside-invisible shadows
Darken a sunny mind
...you lay in bed, in scare
caused sweat, afraid of what?

The leaden weight, that drops,
And crushes pleasant thoughts.

Short steps, trying to escape;
Night air stabs the lungs,
With the chilly breath
Of a gone down sun-
Refreshing you, somewhat.

But something estranged
From your sight holds up,
The battle flag of inner fright--

Across the valley, far hills echo
Noises of something blood colored-
Dressed in shades of crimson dread,
Against which logic
Wears no mail,or wrap of any other;

Passing time proves poor defense
When the nothing comes down from the steppes
Of endless mind-land plains.
The battle Monsters teeth make bleed;
Again, no walk will bring you comfort,
When you are self estranged.

You swing your logic sword to slash
The devil fiend, in hopes
To hear its last deaths rattle..

But you hear no moan, no silent void,
As the heart of the mean red beast,
Beats on, and on.

I know what I did to "the mean red beast." I spit in his eye and kneed him in his testiculars.

Thanks Jerry

I bet the beast turned a brighter red when you did that...lol

Ford, you did an amazing job here. The mean reds! Out of nowhere they choke us, indeed.

I have my breathing techniques and of course I must switch on the light ... Tiffany is too far away!

Great write really.

Margherita

(thank you for the explanation of tanka, one day I might try it!)
