Sentries of frost tipped rushes
Escort the sleepy river to the sea
I walk in the cold mute morning
Treading crackle grass underfoot
~
The sky rests with grey uniformity
Unmoving depression to far horizons
The plough torn fields offer no beauty
Birds have sang their last hurrah
~
Romney bells over the marshland
A requiem for the dying year
I look for the lights of home
To the fireside and buttered toast

OH NO, I can’t stand the sight, smell or taste of the stuff. France is only 20miles away across the Channel and when the wind is in the south the smell wafts over here. Plays bloody havoc with the Honeysuckle.

Winter is the natural time to rest, reflect, and look forward. I see all of this in this poem..Slumbering fields, grey sky, and birds without voice. But bells, house lights, and buttered toast offer shelter from the drear..
And so we wait it out, as only humans have want to do.

enjoyed the poem
