Receding Man After mum died Dad never slept in their bedroom, morning sun would find him sat on their bed with a memory and her fading scent. Later, confused, he could not be sure if there was a bathroom in the house, whether two other people lived in the front bedroom, if this was his home. One evening he said “I wanted to go down the road, see what the boys were up to”, then sagged, like someone soon to be lost, someone in the sea waving their arms, that I could swim out to but never bring back, and said… “but I’ve changed my mind now”. Losing someone you love is unique in that we all react to it a little differently. Most know the feeling and those that don't likely will before they themselves die. You captured one close to you very well. 88's friend She told me "play one for your supper Danny and maybe you'll get breakfast". |

Very poignant write, Pete. Men seem to have more difficulties to cope with life after the loss of their life partners. One of the worst things that can happen is what you rendered here so powerfully, the fading clarity of mind. Margherita |

The last stanza tells me that he has finally understood that she was gone and was not coming back. ~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~ |
