we are the destruction of style we annihilate all rules and control we, then are free poets of our time somewhat dishonestly challenge life find life uncomplicated placing our hand on a crossword puzzle book our own holy word write words sans revered implication remove all erudite airs like the pole dancer disrobes we are naked before the old ones face-to-face with Whitman, Wilde and Lord Bryon we throw our hands up as Teasdale, Sarah appears bending our knees to the literary ghosts' of the past imploring forgiveness for trashing poetical thoughts and are stunned when these poets laugh loudly we beg even harder for forgiveness then cease and desist and are quite solemn bloodied from tip-to-toe remembering when our bodies pristine glowed thinking of ecstasy and bliss trying to coax it from the shadows we, then, uncork a bottle of cheap California burgundy wistfully think love can really be ours we, then call back lovely smiles when we looked at life with passionate hearts wish silently for the return of our Muse bow our heads, accept her directive thank her for her wisdom and carry on ©December 13, 2015 / Jerry Pat Bolton ~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~ |

Passionate hearts are all around us. It's how we choose to live our life in spite of all the destruction, violence and political unrest...we are the caption of our own vessels and chart our own course, weathering the storms as best we can. |

Blues, thank you for chiming in on my poem. And I know you are correct in your thoughts on us "weathering the storms" of life as best we can. Thank you . . . ~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~ |

I never read the old masters other than what I was exposed to in High School then and now. The only one poet I really admire is Emily Dickenson. I feel no need to compete. ~L |

Thank you Lori, I never read them either until I started trying to write poems, and for the most part I didn't like any of them. Loved Robert Service and a few others. I didn't mean I was trying to compete, my object was that we changed completely the way poetry is written. Guess I failed miserably to bring that out in the poem. Thanks again. ~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~ |

You carry on perfectly well, dear Jerry! Yes, you are right, we mainly write freestyle poems and enjoy it. The "old" ones might not appreciate our way with words, but everything changes in this world. And the change in the written words is enormous! When I began writing, it seemed "obligatory" to rhyme but I didn't really like it, sometimes I couldn't hear the music when rhymes were somehow "forced". Sometimes rhymes happen just so and then the tune is there. Here on Pip there is a workshop forum where in former times one could try to learn all the different forms of classical poetry, it was a challenge and I admire those who succeed, but it's not for me. I think you rendered your point with great power. Margherita |

Hey there JerryPat! Read your poetry with interest. Poetry gives me a chance to vent any emotion I'm experiencing at the moment. I've let many escape by not 'imprisoning' them during various 'rushes', but I have caught a few. You seem to catch them right by the throat and this read of yours is one those evasive rascals. One poet that I enjoy reading is Edgar Guest. You just can't come away from his words with a frown. I consider his work as a poet to Rockwell's as an artist. 88's friend She told me "play one for your supper Danny and maybe you'll get breakfast". |

Oh Margherita, when I first started writing poetry it was strictly the rhyming style. Somewhere along the way I found I could, in my view, make my work more complete if I wrote free style. I still write rhyme from time to time however. Thanks for understand where I was coming from . . . ~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~ |

Appreciate your kindness for reading and commenting on my latest poem, Ticklefingers. I surely hope it wasn't too evasive, I realize I allow myself to sometimes get carried away with my poetical self. Thank you . . . ~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~ |
