seeing the oil for the very first time
and the woman it so graciously formed
led me to stare for hours on end
her face my heart and soul warmed

the hands of the artist inspired by love
had created her image of beauty
a gift reserved for another, not I
a soldier, that was my duty

years have passed, my wounds have healed
though in time I would return
to the land that claimed a part of me
and the woman for whom I still yearn

the oil you see, is forever young
but for you and I my friend
each sunrise brings another day
which we follow to its end

and so I close, I've made my peace
where I go she may not join me
to a place where paintings do not hang
only miseries of war surrounding

She told me "play one for your supper Danny and maybe you'll get breakfast".

My, my, such honest approach to the misery of war, even in relationships can war be found. To lose what was lost is tragic enough, but to bring it all back up within your memories is cruel even more so.

fine writing !

everything about the "Great Darkness" (as I call the Nam era) in memory land is 'cruel' for some of us.

Ticklefingers - This evoked memories long forgotten during another time of Love and War. Nice writing. Namyh

"where I go she may not join me

War and its many experiences are unique to each man and woman who served. Of the many fine lines in your poem, these which make up your finale are a somber reminder of loss and regrets.
