It was a sunny afternoon Out on the bay like I always was After the long drive through pine trees I never cover ground, burn rubber, like I do when I'm driving north Through the aisle of pines Looking at my mirrors to make sure the boat is still there I put long hours into that boat Changing it from something it wasn't into something it wanted to be A safe platform, stable, heavy enough to take the big waves out on 90 miles of open water Those four foot waves reminding of how awesome God really is That old red lund now dull khaki with marsh brush painted on, Big as life, to brave big weather, bad weather Duck weather Easing the throttle to take the next wave But it was sunny now, and beautiful - warm, even. And a flock of scoters, too far from home Came screaming into the decoys They only circled once, white wings flashing in the sun And it was only to slow down for the landing three of them splashed on the water for the last time Each after the reporting echo of 3" shell. I knew they were sea ducks And I knew who had sent them to me. So I picked them up, in the big lund. Three trophies was enough to pick up the blocks So I motored back in and kissed my wife And thanked the one that sent me the scoters. |

My father liked to hunt ducks, but it never took with me. I was always in fear of shooting Daffy. Afloat in a Lund sounds fun though. ...just bein' Bluesy |

Dear Paul, though my tender heart is in pain for the abrupt interruption of an animal's life, I must agree that humans have evolved and survived certainly because they were able to hunt ... My favorite uncle was a hunter and he had his philosophy on hunting and he loved the animals and also helped them survive rough winters etc. As long as you consider it a gift from Above, I can accept it and you have written a touching piece here. Gratitude is part of your expression and that is praiseworthy. Margherita |
