Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Ever so glad to be taking a ride in the car…
He had no idea how far
he would go in the next fourteen days,
how many new trails his quivering nose would blaze…

He had known something was not right
when his kennel disappeared from sight.
He looked at me and a shiver ran through him.
If he only had known that shiver was an omen.

The thunder tormented him the very first night.
He shook himself silly, nearly dying of fright.
He’d soon find new things to shake about.
The cold mountain air shook him inside out.

His new parka was just the thing from PETCO,
it let him travel hooded and unnoticed incognito
like a four legged caterpillar in a cocoon.
He was stuffed in lovely, tufted maroon.

As he sat  cuddling one dawn  minding his peace
his reverie was broken by a gaggle of geese.
In they came quacking one by one.
Then they were gone and the quacking was done.

He pricked his ears and lifted his head from sleep
he watched that gaggle waddle by without a peep.
He cocked his head, then he laid it back down,
with never so much as uttering a sound.

Despite the onslaught of the newness that near
to overwhelmed his sniffle snuffling here to there,
he enjoys his time at camp in his pen with a nap.
Or to curl up by the fire, and sleep in mom’s lap.

Winston goes to bed in the van about eight,
curled on mom’s pillow, hoping she won’t be late.
When mom does comes to bed, there’s one last walk for the night
and then wrestling the covers to get them just right.

Winston has been admired all along our walks.
He has been the beginning of some very nice talks.
One conversation had a direct impact on him,
next thing he knew his mustache was getting a trim.

Walks are, by far, his favorite time of day.
Body functions aside, he is there for nose play.
The pet walk at the camp is a thing of beauty,
a place of wildflowers and waterfalls to do his duty.

He rolls in the green grass and purple clover,
kicking his feet and wiggling all over.
Trit-trotting every which a way,
he is a happy little camper on holiday.

"Body functions aside, he is there for nose play" . . . I know that is the truth, Zoe is the same way. / Are you still in the mountains or at home? Sounds like you are still on vacation . . . Love Winston's poem.

Jimmy,
Great idea! He can tell you about all the dead mice (fresh and dried) he has found and tried to eat. I decided to leave that out of the poem.  ~L
