Faith of our Fathers -Great Poets and other Wise Men- Of poets that have lived upon this earth, though some wrote not so much of God they knew enough to know His words they wrote enough to show His worth... "O human love; thou spirit given On Earth, of all we hope in Heaven." Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849) p.514. All references are "America's God and Country, Encyclopedia of Quotations, William J. Federer, 2000, Softcover. "Even such is time, that takes in trust our youth, our joy, all we have, And pays us but with age and dust, Who in the dark and silent grave, When we have wandered all our ways, Shuts up the story of our days, And from which earth, and grave, and dust, the Lord shall raise me up, I trust." Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) p.525. "A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on." Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) p.547 "Oh, on that day, that wrathful day, When man to judgement wakes from clay, Be Thou, O Christ, the sinners stay Though heaven and earth shall pass away, Within this awful volume lies The mystery of mysteries, Happiest they of human race, To read, to fear, to hope, to pray, To lift the latch, and force the way; And better had they ne'er been born Who read to doubt or read to scorn." Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) p.549-50. "If the Ten Commandments were not written by Moses, they were written by another fellow of the same name." Mark Twain (1835-1910) p.592. "All I have seen has taught me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen." Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) p.229. "If you (General Bertrand) do not perceive that Jesus Christ is God, very well: then I did wrong to make you a General." "the Bible is no mere book, but a Living creature, with a power that conquers all that oppose it." Napolean Bonaparte I (1769-1821) p.463. "There is one God, the Father, ever-living, omnipresent, omnisicient, almighty, the maker of heaven and earth, and one Mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus." Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) p.473 JamesLee 7/25/15 |

These men may not have considered themselves 'apologists', but at the very least they were staunch defenders of their faith. You obviously recognized this in your stellar compilation of their words. These were among my favorites. With your permission, I shall copy them to a folder I keep for just such remembrances. "If the Ten Commandments were not written by Moses, they were written by another fellow of the same name." Mark Twain (1835-1910) p.592. "All I have seen has taught me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen." Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) p.229. "If you (General Bertrand) do not perceive that Jesus Christ is God, very well: then I did wrong to make you a General." "the Bible is no mere book, but a Living creature, with a power that conquers all that oppose it." Napolean Bonaparte I (1769-1821) p.463. 88's friend, and many thanks for your post. She told me "play one for your supper Danny and maybe you'll get breakfast". |
