lesson learned I got my first black eye in a poker game one hot summer afternoon in Illinois. I was roy rogers and I caught billy the kid dealing aces to himself from the bottom of the deck, so I called him out by using the most vile and dirty word a 7-year-old roy rogers would dare use while mother was within earshot. “Cheater!!!” I angrily yelled. “I saw what you did¸ you cheater!!!” without hesitation he smacked me a good one in the eye. he then stole the marbles from the pot and made his escape down the porch stairs hopped onto his bike and rode off into the blinding afternoon sun my screams of pain brought mother to my side to tend to an already swollen eye. that eye would soon display countless shades of purple, red and yellow. the colors would change and blend the swelling would grow and subside for the next couple of weeks. my embarrassment and anger would stay with me much longer if by chance I’d meet billy the kid today I’d shake his hand, thank him and then let that 7-year-old roy rogers smack him a good one in the eye. I would remind him “Cheater!!!” lesson learned |

reminds me of a marble game I had with a larger boy when I was young...I didn't want him to walk away with all the marbles because I thought he had cheated...next thing you know we were fighting over a few marbles...james |
