~*~

You were the waves lapping at my feet
the sun and moon
engaging the sea.
You were the beaded strand
shimmering in the starlight
slipping away on the horizon.

Casting nets from all sides,
you were the buoy that kept me afloat
and I knew no other way
than to hold you close.
Until time took it's toll, over time.

So I went about untangling the ties
and sordid lines,
washing away my resolve
through the course of forty knots and fickle winds
luring me in.

It is those turn of events that go unnoticed.
Those weights and measures
sinking to the bottom,
buried beneath the blue ocean of hope
dragging my heart down.

Sifting through scattered sands
slow the shifting
that settles the drifting,
distancing the shore
and the idle pull to be near you.

Carried away,
like hidden jewels that preen in the sunlight
polished and set smooth
teemed with the elements
become worn and weathered from the rise and fall.

Lulled by the rippled remains
left in the wake of summer's spell
rocked by the warmest rain
and those days of blue
when all that glittered,
shimmered silver and gold.

~*~

What a truly compelling piece of writing you have here, Blues. You give the reader such tender moments to dwell upon, even, as you said in your own way, time erodes things. This is my absolute favorite verse of the poem . . .
quote:
It is those turn of events that go unnoticed.
Those weights and measures
sinking to the bottom,
buried beneath blue ocean of hope
dragging my heart down.

Your Muse was in fine form when "Days of Blue" was written. Each stanza is classic, wonderful poetry.

Yea my muse and I never made it very far, I guess you could say we started sinking as soon as we set sail.

Thank you for leaving such a nice reply JP, I really appreciate it.

I like the way you keep with the metaphor.  It's effectively done. Your images are strong, and I especially like the weights sinking to the bottom, and taking your heart with them.

Bluesy gal, your writing is amazing which means you are amazing too.  To write it is to feel it.  I'm sorry you had to feel what you have written about here but if not we would have missed out on great poetry.  Thank you!

I used to think you had a golden pen... that everything you wrote turned to gold somehow... this one is far too precious to simply put that label on.  Wonderful wording.  I'm so glad you bear your soul for us.

If anything could be described as a pleasure to read, it this poem. It absolutely oozes gentle nostalgia and longing. A plethora of grand metaphor and beautifully flowing lines. A poem to be most proud of.

Blues

Ah, your name fits you perfectly! I couldn't figure out why I was avoiding reading this until I did. I related hard. It was a bizarre combo of my two dead ex's. Your metaphors  were to die for. Your imagery was National Geographic on a movie screen.
Today was a good day to go there.

Funny what the insight of age gives one, isn't it?  The way it causes one to look back with so many what if's, could'a beens, had beens, the way it makes us believe things were better then (even if they might have been), the way one's reality becomes skewed . . .

Memories - where would one be without them...

Blusie, so nice to read you again, and oh, that bittersweet feeling of lose, makes for the best words of poetry and inspiration...and it is from those painful moments, we learn to celebrate the wonders of life....

Now THAT, my friend, is a blues serenade.
And it's magnificent like the most gorgeous sigh on a heart lifting, soul drifting rainy day. Or something like that.

To the library this goes!

You always are deeply inspiring and it is a gift to read you.

I could never miss an opportunity to hear from you Richy. I know the board will light up like Christmas tree when folks find you back on the block!

A finer pen than yours never scratched the surface of the blue.

Oh Richy, you really know how to put a twinkle in my eye and warm my heart to no end.  Yes there are so many memories aren't there, ones I hold near and dear.  I'm so glad you stopped by. I'm always missing you...
