I look out my window, trying to conjure my mind to write a poem. Some poets say they can write a poem this way. I wonder if it will work for me. It's winter and it feels cold outside, what else is there worthy of a poem? The trees are bare, the young ones with white-skinned slender trunks glistening in the sun, and the older ones beside them have graying branches, like grandmothers watching over children. Snow icicles tiptoe on top of fences, weightless flakes dance randomly, huge patches spread themselves lazily on driveways. Is there a poem waiting to be written there? You tell me, because I'm stumped. I'd rather become a bird, a sea gull maybe- unfettered and free to fly to the oceanside where there's no snow - watch kids throw stones over the water, walk on bare feet, and build sand castles. In my mind I watch this seascape picture, my fingers itch to grab a pen I can see a poem hovering inside of me- my imagination crazily spinning like the stone the kid hurled over the waves, waves break, leaving a scud of foam, the sea heaving a sigh. I follow the stone's journey when it drops down inside the ocean's floor - where undersea gardens of seaweed undulate in the shallows. I am the eyes of the stone, warily watching other creature inhabitants in the deep blue waters skipping over corals, settling on kelp dodging little fishes dodging the stone. Now I tire being a stone. I surface above the water. I want to ride on the curl of a white-capped wave rolling, floating with no effort towards the shore, slapping the sand gently. My journey is over. I look for the seabird to bring me back home. Now maybe words will flow smoothly to form a poem. But I feel exhausted from my flight with the seabird, following the stone into the deep, and riding on the wave. Don't I owe myself a well deserved rest? I sit again by the window and bargain with myself. Tomorrow I promise to write that elusive poem. |

This is a very beautiful dream poem and I loved to follow you on your journey, dear Josefina! A window always enhances the longing for freedom and you rendered these feelings in a most enjoyable way. Welcome back! Love, Margherita "Love is the One who masters all things; |

Loved this. The birth of a poem, and the travels we took. From the icy lands to the sea and down. Then back up again.....to write the poem. Applause from me; enjoyed the journey. |

Gosh, if we could just bargain with ourselves to write that "illusive" poem that we know is there, just waiting . . . wonderful piece, my friend, j. |
