A thousand stars will shimmer in the night; 'Tis magic on the mirror of the eyes And I draw my gaze in an upward flight To catch the spell amidst my softened sighs -- But then the rays of dawn will chase the stars To their daily rest, and my gaze descends As I lament with melancholy bars -- But what a false refrain! What false pretends! For when the earthly realm I do survey 'Tis thrust upon the canvass of my mind That ageless truth will to my heart relay Where the stars equal low and high I find: They ever will above, below remain - In woman's eyes they will their spell sustain.
