Between the Leaves I hold the leaf now russet brown The sap within its veins long gone So dry and wrinkled like my frown Those distant days, the sun, had shone And if my fingers were to curl To crush the leaf to fragments small And memories when buds unfurl Or dust to dust the leaves to fall Like flowers pressed within a book The reason why just lost in time Discovered there when children look The story hid between each line The beauty of those autumn days Such vivid tones in red and gold And through the leaves I see the rays But they can’t warm a soul so cold. |

Love the wordplay here, Michael. The back story of this poem just lingers in the background like a crushed leaf' residue. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

The colors in this poem bring to life the imagery that touches the heart with loss...Heartfelt and beautiful... |
