   What a Poet Must Believe
[Nemo vir est qui mundum non
          reddat meliorem ]

Beneath shredded clouds
  and angry sky,
amid these tall, broken,
and huddling forms of
  bare-bone trees,
here in this lonely place
this dead time, from
the frigidly indifferent
  heart
of relentless Winter,
and an ever-darkling land
of runaway dreams,
this poet must believe
that words are the
only inexhaustible
source of true ‘magic’
with the power to
change the world.
