Cranberry Sauce & Mistletoe (from Faces of Love) Leaves, tumbling down in red, yellow and brown, cool breeze, smoky scent, pumpkin smiles now turned to frowns their caving faces having had their day. Autumn air, a touch of Winter on Summer's ebbing breath, entices the soul, fills the chest with instinctual longing to gather and chop, to prepare for the feast of Thanksgiving, prelude to the long winter's snow. Turkey smell, dressing, food enough to fill the barn, family and friends, strife forgotten, love and togetherness, one in our melding, and thanks to the Almighty who saw us through the perils that stood in our way. Pass the potatoes, the gravy, and the cranberry sauce, too. Oh, there it is, on the table in the doorway under the mistletoe, where lovers first met and swore to be true, where they kiss again renewing their vows and follow it's path through the best of days, to Christmas, the culmination of praise, when spirits renew, and spring is just beyond the day, a restful sleep, a dream away. © wesley james beard, jr. |
