The Fifth

Silence, perhaps the only right
A man like me can hold on to;
I wake to face the morning light,
And all that's left for me to do.
You want answers I can't present,
Though your eyes press, entreat and plead.
Still so unclear of all I've meant,
What choice have I left, but to bleed?

There's nothing at all I can say.
There's nothing talking will achieve,
Dissected for reason and way
You'll simply refuse to believe.
I walk away yet standing still.
I meet tomorrow with grim peace,
Though it bodes for me naught but ill
Silence nor speaking could release.

The truth too much for you to hold,
I cannot sugarcoat the lies
Enough to warm a heart turned cold—
To change that aspect in your eyes.
Forgiveness too much to ask for;
I lack the height, the breadth, the width
Of measure needed to implore
You, so I'll just take the fifth.

"Another day, some other way."
The parting words of hopeful louts
Who watch tomorrow slip away
While still fighting yesterday's bouts.
Not me.  I offer not a word—
Set my path toward that setting sun.
I give up all, my truths unheard
To die with me on hopes undone.

I like this one, deep emotion, the silence screams. Well written Thanks for sharing.

You have a right to take the fifth, Michael.
Sometimes peace is worth everything.

"Silence nor speaking could release."

I guess you're right, Michael.
Great piece!
