First and Last When first we met, one thought I drew, Or maybe dreamt—we'd met before. A simple touch I knew I knew, It meant too much to not mean more. A smile that told me all was well— That I didn't need hurt so much; As I felt caught up in the spell Of magic healing in in her touch. Two eyes that shimmered radiance, With a voice that lit up the dark... I swore forever we would dance, Yet somehow fell short of that mark. She showed me all that love could be... All I saw was what I could not. And so it was my destiny To curse my Lady of Shalott— Destroy our Camelot. And as time passed, I grew distant, Still even more she tried and tried To reach something non-existent Within a man whose soul has died. Passion I watched drain from her eyes, As her balm of touch waned in power. Silent, I listened to her cries; Unto each accursed, waking hour. I left her to the cold and rain, Though she still left my heart astir; For I could not help feel the pain That loving me was causing her. When last we touched, I closed the book On love, for the love I had stilled. As she floated on down the brook, A countenance that only chilled— Heart ever unfulfilled. Michael Anderson 7/14/13 |

quote: Oh, dear Michael, this is both extremely glorious and extremely melancholic. Why does it happen that with such a perfect initial harmony, the music stops and we are not able to dance anymore? In my case (yes I did experience something that makes me relate to the role YOU have in this tragic story), I couldn't bear the total devotion, the total abandon and the total admiration, as I didn't recognize in me the perfection that person had projected on me, couldn't accept all that love. It was as if that other sacrificed himself and put me on a pedestal, where I didn't feel comfortable ... The pain was deep in the end, but no soul is condemned to death. The soul is eternal and always new and pure, especially when we are able to forgive ourselves and others for our behaviours not always in harmony with the law of Heavens. Thank you again, for allowing me to elaborate the feelings you stirred with this impressive piece of poetry. Love, Margherita |
