I catch myself going to the store
a lot
don't really need anything
'course I buy things
sometimes crazy things
just walked to my refrigerator
opened the door
it was full
have to clean out things
make room for something else
I found myself thinking
then I though about what I had thought
that's crazy
I said to myself
I live alone
nobody but me and my little mutt
live here
oh
that reminds me
I over-buy for her too
I say I do it because I love her
and I do love her
but me opening the fridge
thinking those thoughts
writing them down here
brings something home to me
I'm lonely
that is why I go to the store every day
buy stuff
don't know why it has never hit me before
damn
guess I'll have to do something
start going out
I never even have a cup of java anywhere
stay here in The Hovel
and write
I'm not molding
because I am doing something I like
but I guess I miss people
been a few years since my wife died
guess it's time
I got out
started seeing people
damn

Yeah you're right, Emma. Maybe I can find a writers group. Thanks for the tip and for being here.

Good for you Jerry! Not only will it be good for you, but think about what a thrill it will be for those lucky individuals who get to rub shoulders with you!

Hah! You're full of it this morning, Lori. I imagine I'll continue my life as it is. I'm comfortable with it. Yesterday it just hit me that I might be going to the store unnecessarily because I was lonely.

Thank you Emma, that is a grand suggestion. Getting some much needed contact with others and helping out at the same time. This is a thought I would have associated with you because you seem to be a caring person. Thanks again.

I'm pretty much in the same position as you, Jerry, except that retail therapy doesn't cut it for me and I've come to know that I don't feel comfortable in groups.  Too much "energy" floating about.  Anyway, been there, done that.  At the end of the day just a distraction that doesn't really fill the void and yet people need people.

I hear you talking, Helen. I guess it is just the time of my life and it will just have to deal with it. Thank you for commiserating with me.

It's so hard to lose someone dear.
Loneliness is an awful thing, when you don't seek for it.

Jerry, excuse me please, if I get something wrong. My English vocabulary is not as large as I wish.
I can't understand this line:

"been a few years sine my wife died"

What does the word "sine" mean here?
I would think that it's "shine" with a misprint, but I'm not sure.
I hope you won't consider me impolite.

Hah! Gale your English is good enough to catch a typo. The word is supposed to be "since." The sentence should read . . . "been a few years since my wife died."

Thank you so much for reading my poem and catching that typo.

Perhaps this "lonely time" is the time we are allotted to become acquainted with ourselves as difficult as it is, Jerry.

Very possible that is the key, Ida. I sure have the time to consider things without outside interest. Thank you for your input.
