HIATUS
29 May 2013

Sitting outside
with my dog and my cat
basking in the glorious winter sunshine,
my book lying neglected,
on my lap,
I look up
and thirstily imbibe
the chorusing
of a multitude of songsters
of all kinds and colours and timbres.
A toad tree’s symbiotic parasite
is in full candle-bloom
and is a feast for avian delight.
Laughing doves add their baritone balm
from a tree next door
and a passing hadedah,
haa-haa’s from the cloudless blue
and my cat licks my dog’s chest
in companionship and understanding
and my dog closes his eyes in reply
and the sun illuminates the wings
of a lone wasp, golden-brown,
and the army of green-tipped spear-buds
pointing Heavenwards on an aloe,
blush at their bases,
promising wild-orange sun-worshipping soon
and isolation and burdens and problems and fears
and impossible workloads and unrelenting deadlines
and fighting for survival
slip from my shoulders
and trickle down my arms
to be evaporated into a haze
for a heart-smile while
and the magnitude of “and”
envelops me into sky-wide bliss and gratitude.

Your poem was very therapeutic. Thank you. It gave me a bit of a "Hiatus" within the especially most recent chaos of my day to day as well to reflect a bit on my dog licking my cat's ear as he often does and also the not at all familiar site of two doves sitting on my backyard fence looking out across the open fields... Yeah, that one probably would have been lost forever if not for your poem.  Thanks, Diana, I really, really needed the break your poem provided at this very moment in time. Thank you!

Bob, with all my heart, I am so happy that my poem did all that for you, and especially right when you needed it the most.  Please let my poem remind you to see such precious things as often as possible every day, especially when chaos tries to take over.  Please give your dog and your cat a hug from Auntie Di from South Africa.  Smiles.

EmmaRose, I am glad this poem found you in the light of your poem, Floral Rain.  Thank you for looking outside your own sphere, as you always do.

I love the call of my hadedah friends too.   Thank you for enjoying them.

Spiros, I too, am glad you found this poem today, in the light of the anniversary of your mother's death.
