I met my neighbors today. The man was nice and the woman just walked away. Maybe she was a figure of my imagination. He asked me if I was going to do some gardening. I told him I was. I needed to trim my bushes. The weather was cool. He told me to watch out for black widow spiders. My wife smashed two yesterday. I began to clip, clip, clip… The bush was tall and I needed a footstool to reach it’s top. I found a fold-up chair instead, and… “Smash!” I looked around and no one saw me fall. Thank goodness… No one there, but… my dog. The chair was mangled. We went for a walk and I talked to an Indian. He’s actually from India and has a Masters in Statistics. He tried to go to community college here, but they told him to take basic math. Go figure. My dog sniffed his leg. He said my dog probably smelt his dog. I told him that’s fine as long as he doesn’t mark his territory. We laughed. We talked about our dogs and he showed me where he’d been bitten by his. I showed him my bruises from the fall. He asked me if it was a rash and I told him no… black widow spider. |

Come on, really? And you were not only able to just go for a walk, but also to write so intriguingly about it! I loved this story about two meeting heroes of the day. Margherita |

a sweet slice of life, and a universal appeal, despite the sting of the spider |

I love your analogy of the black widow spider and the meeting with the new neighbors and the almost insulting women who I likened to the black widow. ~*~ PMS jokes aren't funny, period. ~*~ |

Thanks, Margherita... Hero? Moi? Ha! Really, just another day in my rural American life. Really! Yep, it all happened yesterday! There were a couple of Portuguese fellers I talked to at the same time, but, um, that would have really complicated the story that much more, so, um, yeah, I left them guys out. Anyways, glad you enjoyed this my little escapade for the day. Always a pleasure to hear from you. |

Hey, beaniebaby, welcome back! I mean it, really... you've been gone a few and, so, Welcome Back! Thanks, Ida... Um, yeah, I do suppose it was a bit more 'adventurous' than a normal day... Thank Goodness! Again, thanks. |

Well, I suppose there are worse things out there, but not by much. Nasty little buggars they are. I've had one or two occasions to realize just how bad a spider bite can be. Enjoyed the read. Michael |

Very, very cute, my friend. Truthful too. My son lives in Riverside, and I can't believe all the BW's he sees/I see when visiting. I lived in Cal. almost 10 years . . . never saw one. And I was everywhere in SoCal, don't think I missed a spot from the coast to the Arizona line. Must have been blind in those days - too much Thunderbird Wine I guess. Again .. Cool and interesting write!! j. |

*smiling* I had a neighbor who would come to pick my peppers from my garden. Every time she did so she would tell me that she wasn't always dumb--that she had been bitten by a black widow spider when she was five. (She reported this to me every single time she unburdened my peppers, like it was news.) I never thought she was dumb. But it did lead me to wonder about the genius four year old she must have been... I found your poem refreshing in its simplicity, rather like my former neighbor. Enjoyed. |

Thank you, thank you, Michael, Jimmy, Ms. E from my neck of the woods, and Karen... WoW! Hey, Yeah, I agree, nasty little buggars, Thunderdird... WoW, do they still make that? Happy to have you looking in my window (looking out for peeping-toms as I write), and glad you enjoyed my simplistic approach, you made me wonder if I was a genius at four. Hmmmm? Again, thank you, thank you, thank you, Everyone! Thank you! |
