Death's Chair

This poisoned blood, my penalty,
My life a waste of decency.
A sheet of glass hiding but,
My few friends and my enemies.

Twelve pairs of eyes upon my own,
Of which my acts, none condone.
Alas, the pain that I compelled,
Compares not to my overthrow.

A needle in my vile skin,
Brings no mercy upon my sins.
A chair, my own, awaits me still,
In the flaming depths of hell.

Life's last hour almost gone,
Death has come to take me home.
I dare not look him in the eye,
As I sing a coward's lullaby.
If any are wondering, this poem is about Capital Punishment.

Niteismyday, I am probably (helping you in) opening up a can of worms, but I have never understood how crime can be punished by crime.  There are so many arguments given for and against capital punishment, but no matter what, murder remains murder no matter how supposedly “lawful” it is in some parts of the world at various times in history.  I know that you were not saying that anyone is a coward for not wanting to die, and that it was the persona in your poem saying so, but I just wanted to say it aloud, that nobody is a coward for not wanting to die.  Thank you for your compassionate and beautiful poem.

Some very striking images portrayed here.  Even knowing the source of the poem, stanza by stanza I felt I could relate to in a personal way.  Nicely done.

I've never witnessed one and, obviously, have never experienced one first hand, but your poem seems to give a very good account of what Capital Punishment must feel like.  Good job.
