I Leave this Place I leave this place of golden corn Where every day is freshly born Where hills rise up but not too high And stay their place against the sky I leave this place of sprawling farms Of stone abodes with olden charms With rippled glass in window panes And barns approached by gravel lanes I leave this place in better hands That know the slope of furrowed lands That man the plow and bury seeds Fullfilling seasons, time and needs I leave these hills, these woods and streams The meadow laced with flowers and dreams The fields, the roads, the hills of blue I leave this place to God and you |

Sounds like a pretty definite taking of your leave, Elizabeth. Within the poem you have give the land and the lands caretakers much praise, not so sure about the one you leave it to. Very enjoyable reading . . . ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

If you bring sentiment into this poem, it is very sad. If you bring practicality into this piece, it is lovely in forging on into new corners of your world. I wish you practicality as you've never had it before, and wish for poems, forevermore! |

I understand... and love this part of the country and its people... and hope that like the replies, you are in no hurry to leave "this place". |

Seems like too beautiful a place to leave but as life changes so must we. The future awaits. Good luck. |

Liz, this is beautiful. It's a fact of life that we do leave. I am taking this one to read to my Mom. She has seen this place ... and she is preparing to leave it. Thank you. Alison |

Liz, I read this when it was new in Pip, but it had me in such floods of tears, that I couldn't reply then. The poem stuck in my memory, and later I thought that I had already replied. Today, I ventured into it with courage and trepidation, and discovered that I hadn't replied. It brings floods of tears again, and all I can say, is please bide a long while. Owl |

I have lived in the beautiful Oley Valley which has remained the sME FOR 300 YEARS, MANY OF THE FARMS STILL OPERATED BY DESCENDENTS of the original settlers, It still maintains the quality of peace and is of historic interest to me, since I do historic research as a pasttime. But I had to leave the valley due to health reasons and moved into my daughters home nearby. I have written 2 little books of poems of the Oley Valley . This one was a recent one Thank you all for your kind comments Liz |

Oh, what a relief! I misinterpreted your poem. As sad as it was for you to leave the valley, I thought you were talking about leaving this earth! Thanks for explaining and lightening my evening. Beeeg smiles. Owl |

You have carefully rhymed your poem To make it rank as a precious gem You have chosen words very wisely And presented it to us damn nicely A feast to the eyes and boost to mind I am happy that your poem I could find. mvvenkataraman |
