The Friendship Coffees two

An imaginary inner dialog

These things I pray:

I ask you to help me?
  I ask for a more regular coffee friendship with Virginia,
less tied to the demands of office work,
perhaps about monthly.
  Maybe following a quick routine checkup
of everything
and after performing whatever incidental work is needed in the office.
IF there isTIME, that is, if it isn’t inappropriate.
If it’s not too much to ask for.
Because it can take weeks
To get seen by a clinician in there,
If they can get you in.
Coffee friendship with Virginia
is just as important to me as clinical care with her.
For both our friendship and our work in clinic
are equally important;
and I ask that both be nurtured
and that neither should ever be neglected at the expense of the other.

I realize that Circumstance may not permit all this,
That office work may simply get too heavy and too much,
That it might be quite a bit  to hope for,
And That all of us have only so much time.
So if this one is really not to be,
Help me to grow in wisdom and to understand.
Friends surround and also love me,
So why ask for any more than I’m already given?
May I delegate these things to you?

An imaginary response:
Of course, you can.
it is Not too much to ask or ever hope for.
Of course, you can.
After all, that for which you long you already have.
It is the very love in your own heart that you are praying for,
A love that is coming right back to you,
A love that may make more difference in her work
Than you may ever know.
What evidence is there
that she does not miss you too?
(after all, she said so herself.
It was she who wanted you to coffee with her
Having finished in the office,
And she really didn’t have to do all that,
And her time is very valuable).
And aren’t longing and missing and loving like that
Such wonderful and very beautiful things?
After all, it shows that you’re not dead yet.
I know you’ll never ask for what you are not given,
And you are so very much deserving
Of all the love and good and beautiful this life can offer you.
It will take time, but I will help you.
It will take time, but I’ll take care of it.
It will take time, so please, please be patient.
It will take time … … okay???

Jaime, you put your thoughts nicely into words. It never hurts to ask as nicely, but in shorter version, if there is time for coffee. jo
