On a cold December day, I had received an invitation to a dinner from a wealthy acquaintance. Many I've attended, none I've enjoyed. "I'm tired of eating salads and listening to business ventures," I told him. He replied, "But the ballerina is coming." We had gone to see her perform once, and her exceptional talent had left us in awe. "Next to godliness" I had heard one man say. I arrived to the same familiar faces. The ballerina was nowhere to be seen, and the conversation was already lulling me to sleep. I kicked my friend beneath the table and he knew at once what I was thinking. He pointed to a woman sitting at the corner of the table. "Truly, that couldn't have been her," I thought. The ballerina I had seen dancing was a vessel full of grace. The one sitting before me was wretched and miserable as a hag. Her skin was pale, bags under her eyes and her hair was an utter mess. I was sure she had a black tongue like that of a hideous serpent, but still I admired her. What had become of her since the first night I had seen her! My curiosity was burning, and I wished to console her, but I was sure my voice would drown trying to swim across the table chatter. Instead, I leaned back in my seat and stared at the table cloth, which was so incredibly white that I had wished to spoil its purity with a blot of red wine. The ballerina hadn't spoken a word all evening. Finally, my curiosity had peaked and I turned to my friend, "What's wrong with her?" He whispered into my ear, "I should've told you earlier, she's infected with a parasite." "A parasite?" I thought to myself. It was only later that evening when I discovered that the death of her lover had been eating her from the inside. |
