Calvin's Gas Station (from Riding The Greyhound) It was long, flat stretch, where all you saw was miles, telephone poles on the left, wire looped from one to the next, for miles, and miles, the sun rising behind us with the dawn, sinking in front of us with the eve, and still, all you saw was miles, and miles and miles. Then a gas station where grey dog stopped. Stepping off the dog was like learning to walk. You had sat so long your legs numbed, and awakening by hitting the ground sent tingling pains up your calves and thighs. Learning to walk, after miles and miles and miles, at Calvin's Gas Station , was almost a letdown - you left, "no-place-to-be", a long ways back, and you've arrived at - "nowhere", with only miles and miles and miles to go - and not all of them beneath the wheels, of the big grey dog. ©wesley james beard, jr. september, 2012 [This message has been edited by jwesley (10-04-2012 02:07 PM).] |

"and not all of them beneath the wheels, of the big grey dog." I know that's for a fact, J. Those miles and miles and miles to go when the big grey dog has left you behind are the worst kinda miles. You know where you need to go, and you look toward the sun and it flips you the bird. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |
