In Fires of Autumn Desires Burn

Time of Modron and Mabon
Great Mother and Divine Son,
time of mystery,
of making mead and drying gathered herbs
of slaking thirst and healing wounds,
sorting life's trajectories
before breathing deep and moving on
to scatter offerings in harvest fields,
to salt new casks of history;

walking woods in wondered steps,
sifting thoughts and wytes with sprites
each branch in turn considers secrets kept,
and lessons there to learn,
to share libations under trees
adorning burial sites with gifts of leaves,
acorns and wine and cones of pine,
to honor those who have passed on;
horns of plenty,
poppy's milk,
feasting this year's efforts,
garden's equity of sweat and silk,
remembering a world long gone
when Morgana and The Green Man ravaging each other's soul
joined in spiral dance throughout time's spinning role
linked in riddle's woven vine;
if leaves were feathers trees would fly
dressed in colors ever bold
red and orange,
brown and gold,
russet maroon,
all startles to a wandered eye
crumbling in cycle soon,
abandoning beneath fair moon's remorseless cry
in lies and shades of rage untold.

Life's Mysteries on ledger's page seek out a simple balance fold,
bent on scales of joy and discontent
against weights of sapphire, amber, quartz and tiger's eye,
loosed honor drifting dearly into smoke of myrrh and sage,
release all prisoners of the heart;
pray thee farewell let past depart.
