surely my eyes have known the words of love
unconditional for forty some years of slow dogs
with dirty feet most of the time, and no reason
for being more than just dogs that hung around

or perhaps another thirty some years of fast women
with bare feet most of the time, and always
a reason for being there or leaving too soon
or not soon enough to make room for the dogs

or for the next one that had even faster hands
that went deeper into my pockets looking for gold
or something that could heal the broken soul
that she most always brought along from before

and surely my eyes have known her love of words
