. There is A certain vacant quality In this after You wander in any room However crowded now Poignantly aware of what And who just isn’t there A wind you cannot feel Bends the listless trees outside In a garden where flowers Offer nothing in sight or scent To obscure the sense of disrepair One can not See himself a king White knight or cavalier In a palace so obviously built From the ruins of Rome So bring on the wine From other worlds And take what pleasures When they come Why should an old man Squander his treasure And what little time remains To serve a bird that never sings . This 'write' rather effectively 'sums it all up' for those of us 'ghosts' from the Vietnam era who have lost everyone/everything that 'matters' [particularly something to 'believe in'] well 'penned' ! |
