The old year's on its way out now.
The new one's at the door.
What has been done is history...
The future lies before.
No matter where our paths may lead
One thing I know as true...
Whatever comes, we'll write it down
'Cause that's what poets do.

We may have tragedies befall
We may have joys bestowed.
We'll use our love of writing as
A way to ease our load.
We'll share our joy with others and
Our pain and sadness, too.
We'll spread our lives on printed page
'Cause that's what poets do.

Perhaps we'll gain some comfort from
The sharing of our grief.
Perhaps our words of laughter will
Bring others some relief.
Our writings will allow us to
Exchange our points of view
And learn from one another's ways
'Cause that's what poets do.

So greet the new year with a smile
An opportunity
To write a host of brand new verse
Into your diary.
Together we will march into
The year 2011
Cause that's what poets do
To reach their own poetic heaven.

Can't say that I can find any disagreement here, Balladeer. Poets and would-be's regurgitate the ills and joys of a world which is quickly becoming very unsafe.

World leaders, if I may use the term loosely, and first-class and rag-tail armies are ready at the drop of a poet's perceived insult to slaughter hundreds in the name of . . . Who knows when it is all said and done, and the poets will dutifully pen lines of epic poems about it.

The ones who make us laugh. The ones who make us cry. And all those between will have their fifteen minutes and three lines in the epic. And after all is through and the world has been reduced to ashes or excelled to new heights, we, the poets and wanna-be's will be scribbling out how it all came about.

To mimic is a form of praise unless
you have no thoughts of your own

It's a good thing someone will be doing the scribbling otherwise there would be no such thing as recorded history. Poetry is, in my opinion, a special way of recording.

Nice to see you, late

Scribble, scribble, scribble. I'll try to do my share in 2011. Nice start here Sir Balladeer. Happy New Year! Peace.

This is a really great ballad and very encouraging. I think you've invented a new genre: the ballad of ars poetica. Wonderful! Thanks a lot and happy New Year.

You're absolutely right!  It is indeed what poets do.  My 2011 is going to be rather topsy-turvy but I've no doubt the happenings will be recorded somewhere and come popping out at some time or other. Great write, Mr. Balladeer!  Much enjoyed!

Happy New Year!

Poets. A special group of people who manifest ideas in vision and words... an ability that is as magical and beautiful as there are expressions of love. So many have touched my thought, expanded my world, and made me smile from the heart out. We are in the world, but we are somehow separate, too, for the humanity we bear in words.  As mute as I sometimes feel, I have been blessed in this arena of friends who choose life!

You say it so eloquently, Michael.  Beautiful verse and truth. ~K

There must be a poem in here somewhere.
