We are deep into the Silly Season when caves of dream merchants are almost spinning in a whirl, all awash in pricey glitter naught but empty fluff in sight, like Congress packing for home, so it's coming on Christmas or so Joni used to sing way back when she was just a bright eyed slip of girl Tin Angel waitress full of empty promise of delight. Can we still say that? Or is this another thing banned beyond meaning, thought crime that needs cleaning, a gender diminutive and two "C" words that could bring potential images of infamy, maybe even light a neural synapse or even two. Wipe out all errant thought ! We ought to have grown up more than this by now, don't you think? Sorry, forgot we're not supposed to think for ourselves; I better watch the lamestream News so I'll know what I should know to hold the views I should hold, accepted, already pre-digested, ‘cause gods forbid I might come upon an idea on my own, based only upon honest information. Oh no, there's one of those words again when will these traps of treachery end? Perhaps after I am glutted by the Hollow Days. ©2007, 2010 by icebox |

Excellent! When the masses finally and ultimately, get enough of the word police it is not going to be a pretty scene. Nice work, icebox. |

HA! Now I should find a certain Joni Mitchell cd. I already and for years now can't stand very much of the Corporate Liars mass media---their lies make me very angry, sort of like Bugs Bunny's martian friend after being "disintegrated"... Good poem, thanks. I guess for "hollow days" one can look up into the nearly dark sky and realize that we are not alone. |

On the subject of thinking for ourselves we seem to allow ourselves to be conveniently led by tradition regardless the origin of the background.. The New Catholic Encyclopedia acknowledges: “The date of Christ’s birth is not known. The gospels indicate neither the day nor the month . . . According to the hypothesis suggested by H. Usener . . . and accepted by most scholars today, the birth of Christ was assigned the date of the winter solstice (December 25 in the Julian Calendar, January 6 in the Egyptian), because on this day, as the sun began its return to northern skies, the pagan devotees of Mithra celebrated the dies natalis Solis Invicti (birthday of the invincible sun). On Dec. 25, 274, Aurelian had proclaimed the sun-god principal patron of the empire and dedicated a temple to him in the Campus Martius. Christmas originated at a time when the cult of the sun was particularly strong at Rome.” M’Clintock and Strong’s Cyclopœdia says: “The observance of Christmas is not of divine appointment, nor is it of N[ew] T[estament] origin. The day of Christ’s birth cannot be ascertained from the N[ew] T[estament], or, indeed, from any other source.” Just makes you wonder doesn't it? Are we thinking for ourselves? Maybe they'll ban you and I together....(smile).... Excellent write! Eric |

Charly...you bring up some valid points, for sure. I myself find celebration of any kind, uncomfortable when it's expected, and would rather find my own special occasions to celebrate with love and friends. Maybe we're not so different. |

icebox, your cynicism is scintillating and I agree wholeheartedly. Some things show how clearly we are puppets with others pulling the strings...this is one of them. Brilliant writing.. |

I am for any excuse to treat one another a little better, once each year, and bring family together. I don't care what you call it or who's birthday it was. Oops, Is that politically in correct? That being said... I think this poem tells it like it is. Ida |

And this is why, now at my advanced age,I can choose to be alone and not enter into pretense. It once seemed to be my duty and I joined in all the fun, "for the children's sake". It first happened years ago when I could not stand the New year celebrations with the fake happiness I saw all around. Now I am free of all of that. And my caring heart still lives for truth and love. latearrival |

at least at this point, the subject is still discussable in private circles ... the day may be coming when freedom of expression is drained away altogether and Whoville, will be ruled finally, by the Grinch (can we still say that?) |
