the lights were
twinkling
the mistletoe
was hung
and beneath the
adorned tree was
but one package-
the one you sent
from overseas

I couldn't
open it
the fear of
falling apart
stopped me

so I held on
to what I had
left of you.
That precious
folded flag.

-Trina.

You'd be surprised by the pain I can imagine inflicting and receiving.

I can hardly bear it. You've made me cry, Trina. This is so touching...
only less than 3 months ago, I attended the funeral of a soldier family member who was killed in service, in Afghanistan. Watching the flag folded and handed to the widow was one of the most wrenching things I  have ever witnessed. She handled it with strength and dignity, but barely. I salute the men and women who serve our country, and their families at home. I am so eternally thankful.

Now I must go get some tissue.

Thanks, truly, for this poem.

Amaryllis
