The big L-1011 Rolled down the taxiway, Hissing, grumbling, and growling, Gears whining like dueling cats, Big tires going bumpy-d-bump Over the imperfect surface, A sudden turn onto the runway, Full power---a thousand lions Arguing fiercely about the finer points Of acceleration, inertia, mass, and momentum! Roll, roll, roll, baby! Careful now; rotate gently About the lateral axis---liftoff! By Jove, we ape-gods Did our thing---hats off Wilbur And Orville---we mounted up wings; We fly; oh we fly so fast, so high! My mind turns to horses and buggies, too many Of them, And too little parking space, and angry Buggy enthusiasts wanting my blood! They wait For me with torches, sticks and stones! Oh, I think I'll just keep on flying, far, far away! [This message has been edited by gilead (12-09-2010 03:54 AM).] |

This is a revision of what I wrote at cruise altitude on a flight from Phoenix, Arizona, after attending a very boring conference on airport parking and ground transportation. I've gotten into trouble with the "ape-gods" thing. I don't mean any harm. Oh, retirement, sweet Lady, hold me ever close! |

Haha! To be able to "get into trouble" is a worthy cause in my opinion, Art, especially when it is over something silly. I have to tell you, I was on that L-1011 with you as I read the lines. The last line was a kicker, but you forgot to include a pot of hot tar and a pick-um-up truck full of feathers with those torches, sticks and stones! |

I hope I didn't overdo it with the revision, but you got me a thinkin'! I kind of like the contrast between the modern and the primitive, a composite of myself! Art [This message has been edited by gilead (12-09-2010 01:32 AM).] |

Agreeing with Jerry, here.. you grab the reader and take us along on the lifting journey through the atmosphere... fun, unique, quite evocative! I enjoyed this whole piece... nice one, Gilead. My best~ Amaryllis A pile of scribbles here: |

Thanks Amaryllis, I enjoyed redoing this little piece from years gone by. It is good to look back and bemuse oneself with laughter. I'll be looking for your poetry. I'm a gabber, but hopefully not an insufferable bore! Best wishes, Art |
