He marched out of the cold dark north
Looking more the two legged polar bear
Than anything human
His skin and cap
Trophies of the arctic beast
With near height to match
Protected his person
While each hand was gloved by the claw
Whereby better to rend the flesh
Should it come to close quarters
The vestiges of his face featured
Scars of past hunting seasons
But was made less visible by white braids and matching beard
What gave him away at the close
Was a belt of sealskin
A finely worked silver buckle
And two ice-pick axes of blue steel
Tucked to the ready

Though one might mistake the measure of the man
His mass was hardened muscle
More solid than the frozen whale blubber he ate to maintain
Much more
His long strides
Sliced the white powder
Like a cutter in the ocean frost
Splitting snowdrifts in two
They spoke of suppressed power
A readiness to spring at the slightest provocation
And the ability to travel miles without measure
He was clearly the most dangerous element
Upon the frozen tundra

Lines around the eyes and mouth promised the potential for a jolly laugh
But his eyes were set to the grim purpose at hand
They were focused on the coming fight
Where Evil stalks the land
And he has a list of the naughty
It’s a long list
And it’s the off season
But Christmas is right around the corner

The presents might come a little late this year

AndrewS - I always thought that Santa was a Viking type, horn wearing, bear clawed, Evil defeating bringer of Christmas presents after the Off Season. Thanks for confirming it. Loved it. Namyh
P.S. - I still hope he doesn't forget my red Captain America pellet gun with optional whistle blower this time.

Santa presented Robert Service style and with such a twist.

Absolutely superb writing! Sorry I was almost wishing it was about something else but then that's just weird ol me.

Write on!

Eric

Marvelous description of a rare man!  I am thoroughly entertained reading this. He certainly puts a new spin on "nice!"  I always thought that word was too generic anyway.

What a talent for spinning intrigue.  So glad I saw this!  ~K

Amaryllis: How could you resist? Thanks for the read & write.

Jerry: Yep, Santa has to get just a little P.O.ed looking at all those naughty names. Thanks for the write.

Prasad: Glad I caught you off guard. Just be sure Santa doesn’t!

Namyh: ME TOO! Can’t you just see it! And he’s just THE shock troop, because there’s a whole army of elves bringing up the rear. As for the Captain America pellet gun… well, you know what happened to Ralphie… “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

Ethome: Been there, done that. Glad you enjoyed the way it went.

Klassy Lassy: Thanks for looking in. Ya, nice is nice, but Santa is a Bad A** during the off season.

Paula Finn: You better keep an eye out... this could be the year. Thanks for the read and write. Peace.

I tend to try and go too conservative, but you go for it. I enjoyed this work much. "Santa is a bad a$$ during the off season"..LOL. Too awesome.

I read this a couple of days ago but the image of a vengeful Santa refused to leave my memory.  Nice write.

The list of the naughty was Schmutzli's business when I was a child in Switzerland. See here: http://www.twofoolszuerich.com/2009/12/santas-little-helper-schmutzli.html

I see that in times of crisis, even Santa Claus is burdened with all the work alone .

A very captivating write and brought memories too ...

Love,
Margherita

Novus Os: I'm glad you enjoyed. Ya, that is kind of a funny thought. Thanks for posting.

Earl: Glad the image stuck with you. While writing this one, the Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' With Disaster" album cover kept coming to mind. Thanks for the read and write.

Margherita: Thanks for the read n' write. I checked out the link. Very interesting stuff. I had never heard of this combo before, but it sounds like somthing the Church would try to incorporate and use to their advantage. I guess with a name like Schmultzli, you'd be P.O.ed too. Thanks for sharing.
