As the gravy dribbled down his chin
the mashed potatoes oozed
out the corners of his mouth
as he tried to make
intelligible conversation.
He spit flecks of food
the more excitedly he spoke.
Though he appeared to be
wearing more of the food
than he was eating,
it didn’t seem to matter at all.
He was completely oblivious
to the scene he made
and those that stared.
He shoved an entire roll
in his mouth and then
pulled it back out again
to add the forgotten butter.
He would occasionally swipe
at his face with a napkin that
did more smearing than clearing.
His eyes sparkled with joy
as he wallowed in our
Thanksgiving feast.
And for our “special" son
we were thankful most of all

The "special" among us can do no wrong. Well, up to a point of course. I really liked the way this played out, ebm, and the last two lines were, of course, special.

Thanks Jerry, things don't always have to be perfect to be very, very special.

Special is...as special does.

And you did this especially well.

Aw, immense paradigm shift, here.. I was thinking `what a slob`, until I read the ending, then I was so touched! Funny how our outlook can change so swiftly... special people are angels.

My best~

Fine writing, Ebm. Thoughts went to and fro and the end was very special indeed.

A most excellent observation. I'm glad there are those in this world who can see such truths. Enjoy.

Special people have an insight to life and an appreciation for it that others can never have..believe me, I know. This is a heart-touching poem, miss, and I think you're pretty special yourself.
