1968
New Orleans
I'd been in worse
and better
places
it was just a room to sleep
sweaty night sleep
and stay
in the daytime, sitting on the bed
being quiet
not bother anyone
that was how it was done
how I wanted it
to hide my future and
secrets
the secrets that drove me there
damn it to hell and back in the first place
Downtown Jackson Brown
Minnie the Moocher and
all those cats
having Mardi Gras
outside my window
shuttered and closed tight window
because . . . I felt like . . .
as I sat and sweated
hording secrets
secrets, like . . .
made me write . . .

Sitting all alone
In a smoky, crowded bar.
Life passes him by

what happened to the . . .
can't even remember
what I’ve lost
sad
ain't it sad
how’d I get this way
alone
when the whole world is partying
I had to write . . .

Carnival is here.
Crowds jam the street with laughter.
He plays solitaire

last night I ventured into
society
sorta
kinda
well, I went . . .

High above the street
A lonely window shines bright.
Love is bought and sold

oh, yeah, I forgot
I have secrets
to tell
if you want to hear ‘em
You do don’t you
huh,
my, my
what good are secrets
ifnobodywantstohear'em
so I write it down
on paper, yeah . . .

Crumpled note on floor
Tells the story of love gone.
A time for dying

I like the feeling in this. After love has gone, we all want to shut the world out eh. Even Mardi Gras seems depressing. Enjoyed this.

Thank you, and yes, Tina, it seems to you when amour falls flat that the world has disappeared, taking all the joy and happiness with it. And it has. Still, we eventually bounce back, otherwise . . .

Thank you very much, ebm, for your gracious comments. Just revisiting the past. This part of the past wasn't much to sing about, but it is enough to write about. Thanks again.

Quite genuine... honest and gritty...powerful juxtaposition of Mardi Gras and the lonely room... wow

I appreciate your candid comments, Amaryllis, Mardi Gras is not the same for all people, as is so much about life. The only thing different for me and that room is that I, unlike so many others, walked out of it finally and kept going. So many don't.

hello JerryPat...To write it down is sometimes the first step of many from the alone room.  I like the personal way you wrote this.

I agree, Martie, and in those days I was writing things down. Just little snippets here and there, knowing I wanted to find an outlet for whatever I was thinking at the time. I think it helped. I know it helped.

Nice going Jerry Pat,

I was a kid like that looking for a daddy.  You made a wise choice.

Very good, Jerry. It has a real flavor to it. Reminds me a little of Nelson Algren style. Nice flair...

"Carnival is here.

I enjoyed the whole thing, but that little bit right there was akin to like watching a baseball fly out of the park.

Your title brought me in, as the guest houses of New Orleans have been an inspirational feast for me in my life. Each of the eccentric characters I met during those days of my own times are potential protagonists of the GAN.

And smile for me, Jerry. You may be sitting on the GAN...it's just that sometimes we don't get to eat the fruit of our labors.

Your work inspired me to remember Old New Orleans, and an even older New Orleans depicted by John Kennedy O'Toole...

May you fare better, blessed be...

Nice to meet you. My name is Karen.

Just in case you were among the tenants of Ruby's. *chuckle*

Much enjoyed.

Ruby's I think not, but who knows, so much has been lost to memory. Thank you, Karen, for you wonderful expressions and comments. Ah, Confederacy of the Dunces, a magnificent book and I can't claim to write in that league. I must plead ignorance, but GAN is not something I am familiar with, at least not abbreviated thusly. I so much appreciate your words to this particular poem. Not good days. There were better one, to come.
