At twelve
.
.
she still wants Mother at her shoulder
with homework, spelling-
.
she learns a new word,
she falls in love
.
and skips around the house
singing "nonchalant! nonchalant!"
.
enchanted with the dance
of  syllables on her tongue-
.
my heart twists a sideways grin
at the blood of my blood
.
enamored with words, with sound
with meanings: "cool, unperturbed"
.
and "unflappable!"
She is delighted.
.
And I am anything
but nonchalant.

you should assemble a folio for her of your pennings, and let her find the play of language through your eyes as well as the wisdom and uncertainties, when she has her own...that is 12

always enjoy your pen ma'am..

Very good! I can hear that word as a stadium or convention cheer in my mind's ear! And just wait until she falls in love... with a boy named "Launcelot"!

Adorable. At that age and fascinated with words, I can only applaud. Most kids these days I have a feeling would think that nonchalant was a new rock group.

Much thanks to everyone~!  Yes, she is a lot of fun... so neat to see her loving language as I do.     Great idea, too, Cpat.  But then I`d feel like I should do that for all 4 of them.. (kiddos).  Maybe should just make a `children`s` folio... for all of them, when they grow~~?  Thanks for the idea!
Best to all~

Funny, I was acting just like that yesterday and I'm soon to be 62.

Guess, I never grew up..........BUT, I'm learning to spell!!

This is really cute and we all know where you're coming from....Love the way you put it down in lines.
