From a whiskey stupor, I opened up my eyes.
I slowly looked around me, and found to my surprise...
I could not recall just where I was, the month, or even day...
The empty bottle on the stand, had took it all away.

I looked around the motel room, it really was a mess-
And as to town, or state, my friend, I could not make a guess.
I didn't know the woman, softly snoring at my side...
I guess that's how it happens when you lose your Cowboy Pride.

One too many rodeos, too long on the road...
One too many "one night stands', once too often throwed-
I longed to be the Champion: the Lord knows I sure tried-
But miles and years both took their toll, and killed my Cowboy Pride.

Born in southwest Texas, I grew up hard and lean...
I thought that I could ride them all, but I was young and green.
Nothing ever thrilled me like that chute gate swinging wide...
But that was long before hard times, took all my
Cowboy Pride.

Cowboy Pride once made me... walk head-high, and proud.
I'd spur my bulls and horses to the roaring of the crowd.
But as the years betrayed me, something died inside...
And now, at last, I realize...it was my Cowboy Pride.

They say pride goes before the fall...
something I usually take to mean that pride can lead you to fall when it rules... but, if you lose it, then the fall may be certain.

well penned sir...

Ahh...Pride - Our best friend & worst enemy. I know this all to well.
I like the flow of this. Enjoyed.

Wistful, engaging, and how true that old habits can be hardest of all to break. Wake early and crack the drapes.
