Once a gazelle

Tiny steps carry her slender figure
through uneventful lonely days.
Though her frailty is tangible
she still masters to walk tall
with innate strength and elegance.

The floor sometimes plays tricks
when it transforms into an abyss.
Her fingers tight on the cane
seem to clutch the rope
of a fragile bridge of sighs
hanging high between the sky
and a shining river of fate.

Once she moved like a gazelle ...

Her life mirrors and unravels
within her transparent eyes.
There is the color of longing
reflecting the many things
that have been and are no more.
Memories play within her mind
during the long silent nights.

Speaking is no more a necessity
she prefers the language of the soul.
With every tiny step she moves closer
to the welcoming gates of eternity.

In the fresh meadows of her heart
she meets with the love of her life
who is waiting for her up there
to walk once again hand in hand.
Her friends the roses and the butterflies
are tender messengers of the skies
who channel his whispers of love.
To their story there is no end …

A soft smile shows in her gaze
in anticipation of the day
when she will shed her tired body
to dance in freedom and joy
upon the light filled paths of heaven

with the pristine grace of a gazelle.

Very beautifully written.

I shan't beg the difference between a gazelle's "pronk" or "stott" here, or between, as you put it, the rose and the butterfly, because such are all parts and parcel of the whole...

Glad to be reading such fine work from you again!

Oh, Margherita, this is very, very beautiful.  I could relate to this on many levels - but waiting to meet Flicka and Daisy and all my other babies - though there's lots of life in me yet, and I still go up stairs 2 at a time for fun.

I love how well you crept into this woman's being (and took your readers with you) and almost were her throughout the poem.  Your love of, and compassion for, humanity makes you an expert at doing this.

Yes there is sadness here (that I can truly relate to) but it is also an amazing and very beautiful piece. Brought tears to my eyes.

Dear Easy1, I do appreciate your kindness in reading and commenting my poems. Thank you so much! Went to see the words "pronk" and "stott" in the dictionary ... the gazelle pronks yes, but with such grace!

Dear Diana, the fact that we are still able to "race" upstairs does indeed not keep us from identifying with the feelings and circumstances of another who can't do this anymore. It is especially difficult for very active women to adjust to the feeling of helplessness. The woman who inspired these thoughts has enjoyed a full life, but now she "prepares" serenely to let go. Thank you from my heart, dear friend. I think all souls experience sometimes a longing to move on where there are no more physical restrictions.

Thank you, dear Amaryllis, for your sensitive reply and appreciation.

Thank you, dear Sunkissed, for telling me you enjoyed this write.

Dear Earl, always a pleasure to have your comments. Thank you so much. Yes there is sadness, but also the awareness of an ongoing life after this earthly existence. This Lady is not bitter towards her life. She has lived it fully and was blessed with a loving husband and children and grandchildren. After the death of her husband her physical weakness increased and she needs assistance. For a very active woman this is hard. She has been a wonderful teacher and preceptor for a long time. Now she shows us how to move with dignity in times of such fragility.

Dear Ida, thank you from my heart, for feeling this and appreciating it through such kind words of understanding.

Love and joy to all. Enjoy the day ...

Thank you Margherita for providing me with the details to fully appreciate this poem.  When I read it again I do feel sad even though I am aware that there is such a thing as an ongoing existance.  I know that we should rejoice in that knowledge but losing a loved one is extremely difficult.

Dear Margherita - It is sad that life should come down to the waiting for relief but it does and always has and to wait serenely is a blessing.  Indeed an exquisite write with lots of insight and compassion.

A true insightful look at reality: Past, present, and future.

Great write.

Be happy!
