Above flowing brown waters
Past the last minutes of sun’s light
The geese hold a ribbon of sound
That takes me with them into evening sky

In their fold of brotherhood
Strapped to invisible currents
Lost in the last pointed star’s reach
Knowing direction by unwritten instinct

They follow ancient echoes
In the fantasy of their call
Shredding sound like guileless music
Into the long low growl of something wild

Written on vellum from broken trees
The sound strips my tongue of its hold on earth
And slings the arch of my inevitable smile
Over the wild open jasmine of time itself

Oh my, that is just so lovely, and the scent of jasmine fills the air so beautifully.

Very pretty, Martie~

And so I learn something new...
again...
from something so ancient.

Thank you, Sissie.

A very beautiful description of sound, scene and perception.

I did have to look up "vellum" to find that the word applies to a cellulose-based paper as well as to sheepskin. 'Tis a great descriptive word as you use it here, though, as it reminds of a "veil"---one that you have skillfully lifted for the reader.

Martie,
"Basking in the sunshine of a bygone afternoon" (Roger Waters). Loved the visuals.

Dear Martie this is so beautiful. We have so many geese and ducks in our are because we live by protected wetlands and I see this miracle every year, coming ang going, for months.

I loved this dear friend.

Hi Richy...they probably passed over you before they did me...I mean these same geese.  What a cool thought.  Thanks for understanding my love for the sound so well.

Martie, I know I emailed you about this perfect gem, but now that I have been able to stay online for more than a minute or so (found the trick - well, one that works currently anyway) I had to re-read this, and tell you again, how magical it is.  I am going to re-read the saved copy in my Martie file and wrap myself in it, and hold it in my memory as I go to sleep tonight.  Thank you for my flight with them.
