The foreman over at the Single Bar ranch left a message
Letting me know he had a few steers that needed delivery over toward McAllister
And the job was mine if I wanted it, since he knew I had
Been over that territory before a few times
And things being lean all over, I might not mind
Taking roads traveled before

I called him back and we arranged for a time
Settled on a price, then agreed that I might be willing
To do some work for them, come time to time.

I hadn’t seen the Boston Mountains in quite a few years
Not since I left Lacey there and headed out on my own
Too scared of trying and too danged fool proud to turn around

They’re still green and still as rough as the times they brought to mind
And the pictures they paint, just as subtle and as grand as the ones
I remembered she had taken sometime way back then.

They say you can’t go back…
Return to what was, or what might have been
And I had no thoughts of trying to even explain the entire why
That came to bring the world down around the dreams or hopes
Since I know that once a fool always a fool holds pretty true
With those who wander through life like me
Never quite sure of themselves or of what to offer

I got the steers dropped off and left the trailer with the Stewarts
Who kindly said they didn’t mind
While I took off and spent a couple of days remembering the twists of roads
And of the White as she winds along strong bluffs
I thought to explore once upon a time

All the while knowing
The curves I had sought once
Would always be memories
And a place I could go
           In my mind

You can 'go back'. My being here today is proof of that. Howdy, Pardner. And .... very nicely done, as always. Bob

You are too kind. You know, I have not attempted any verse in a couple of years. Do you think it's like riding a bicycle? I hope!

We got cattle in the roads all the time, we sure could use yer hand.

A fine write that made me feel kindly melancholy.

I like the diction and the sense of progression through the piece, the open unrolling sense of the verse and the good way in which you included familiar things, such as people you knew, the name of local mountains, and the trailer.  You didn't try to get artsy or airy, and kept things plain and down to earth.  I found a lot to admire in the way you went about this poem.

I wanted a bit more of a sense of ending to it, a sense of bringing things to a clean and impactful close that would have given me a bit of a punch in the solar plexis, but you did give so much, I grateful.  Thanks.

A good story, and the ending to me is a little like the original and best Mad Max ending, just going down the road.

Never been to McAlester, far as I know, but I do know what an Osage Orange is, rugged green mountains are, and have long ago acquaintance with certain bluff country trails and even perhaps a couple of singles bars.

This brings back a few memories in that light, so I will say "Thanks. Good stuff, and a light breakfast."

Passing Shadows...
No ma'am, not from Arkansas... but been there a good many times and spent a few days in Boston Mountains once upon a time.

Grew up with cows... so I know they can be an ornery lot when they find a weak place in the fence to get out then develop a taste of wander lust..

thanks for the eyes on this...and glad it could make you chuckle...

Bob, many thanks sir for the review..

as for the punch in the gut, it was written to be a prelude to those that were to follow. It remains to be seen if they will be written or not, but it is the set up, if you will.

All stories need a place of reference and I am sure that most here don't remember the references that brought this one to mind.
It is, if you will, a continuation of a couple of series of pieces I wrote a few years ago.
If the next does find itself written, perhaps it will have that punch you were looking for.

again.. many thanks...

watch out for the pot holes and the washboarded roads ma'am... there are plenty of them and can toss you out of alignment if you aren't careful. :-)

many thanks for dropping in...and the nice words ma'am... always~ appreciated

Well, I disagree.. you steer well enough and know the roads your on...
that scenic route can be a trying drive
along with being rough...

Belle,
We'll see where the road goes...

as for your personal preferences, a rough ride can certainly shake things up. :-)
