Saluting with misty eyes

0 posted 2010-07-25 04:34 PM

The other night on a random bus, through a random town
The man next to me glad to have company on this Tuesday night
He asked me, as the country drove past
“What’s your story? From where do you hail?
What brings you out an a night like this
Alone, heading into the dark?
What is on your mind that has you in such a state?”
I looked at him with bleary eyes
Blurred with the internal tears I was crying
And wondered what he cared
What had given him the right to interrupt my misery
My self-imposed exile on this, of all nights
“Wondering,” I said, “about life, and how it is I got here
No money, no love to make the nights warm
I had one, once, in a former life, so long ago
Yet, here I am, alone, and wondering how I find my way back.”
He looked at me with eyes old beyond his years
Wisdom unknown by many lining his face
He said, “Let me tell you the secret, my friend
To living a life of no regrets, no tears”
I put down my book and stared into his eyes
With the fires deep in his soul burning for me to see
“Live each day as if life itself ends the next
No thoughts of tomorrow
Let Providence control after that
If, that night, as you close your eyes and think upon the day
Only to find that you left things undone
Statements were left unsaid
Then, you, Sir, wasted your time and His
This day is yours as a gift to do with as you will
What you do with it is your gift back
If you are not completely satisfied with all you have seen
Not willing to die with that day as your last
Start the next to make up for it, and exceed what you hope.”
With that he turned to face the countryside
As I pondered the words he spoke on through the night
With the dawn, I realized I was alone, though still he was beside me
For somewhere through Texas, my new friend breathed his last
Leaving with me the words that I would live by to the end
Never wondering if my day had been wasted
If, through my words and actions, I had left anything undone
Allowed any words to be left unsaid
With anyone unsure of how I felt
It is those words I give to you now, as my life wanders on with its chosen course
"Leave each day as if life itself ends the next
Letting Providence control what comes after"

After having a member dress me down for not posting in so long, I wrote this and placed it here for all to... uh... enjoy, ridicule, ignore, scoff at... whatever.

I am glad that someone here "dressed you down".  When I saw your name with a poem attached to it, I was happy.  It's been a long time since I have read your words?   Laugh? Scoff?  I don't think so.  Wise words framed by a poem that kept me reading.  What more can any of us ask for, Ringo.

Welcome back - I am hoping that we are not going to have to wait so long for the next offering.

Mmm... I wonder who that was?? Lol... I enjoy reading your writing Brad.... Just like you enjoy reading mine, which aren't that great.... but you still try to make me write more so that I get better at it. And I can't thank you enough for being a great friend like you are... Words can't express everything you've done for me.

**hugs**

Ringo,
The line you favored was not mine, "Not willing to accept that day as your last, start the next, then exceed what you hope."
This would be how I would paraphrase an excellent piece of writing.
