I could have told you there were demons in portland
but you would have said the coffee was too good
and the trees were too green for evil to remain

you spoke of the rope monger as if he were god
kissing his fingers on the ends while smiling
telling him about how knots made you ache inside

and sometimes a woman just needs to feel helpless
like she has no say in what will happen next
something about the anticipation is seductive

and the waiting patiently for something eventual
makes one feel more alive then comfortable does
and you didn't know why you got the tattoo really

but you remembered I encountered some of my own there
