Thinking of Dad

I know that when I was young
You were away at work more than not
But of all the memories of my youth
There are no gaps. You’re there the lot

I remember the times you'd read to us
While lying on the hallway floor
From your beloved sci-fi novels
Full of fantastical future lore

There were times I'd sneak downstairs
When you were sure I was asleep
Just to jump out and say BOO!
And watch you scream and leap

I remember how you would ensure the rake
Would fit my hands just so
Then say it must have been made for me
And off to work I'd reluctantly go

In everything you did and said
In all things great and less than grand
You gave me the tools I'd need
To someday become a man

I remember from youth up till this very day
All the fun, the wisdom and love you share
Of all the dads I'll ever meet
Not a one will ever be able to compare.
