Who carved this fertile valley With an old and rustic plow? Who worked til barren bone and sweat Were painted on their brow? Who carved a living out of mud And iron out of ore? Who’s lasting faith and tenets would Perspire from every pore? Who built a farmhouse out of stone A living out of grain A family epic out of love Survival out of pain? It was the staunch Moravian The Huguenot, the Swede It was the German artisan The land and fertile seed It was conviction, strength and faith That conquered life somehow A furrow ripe for planting And an old and rustic plow But it was God, the architect Creator, good and true Who carved this fertile valley Fringed with lovely hills of blue Elizabeth Santos |

This is absolutely lovely, Liz. I loved everything about it, especially its ambiance and even more, its truth. Hope you are feeling well, now. Owl |

I'm German and Swede by birth and born in Pittsbugh, PA so how could i not love this poem called Oley Valley? Your poem is exceptionally beautiful. Lovely work. There must be a poem in here somewhere. |
